Environmental Clean-up: PAST PROJECTS

In April 1999, a pilot study was performed in Coxheath, Nova Scotia. For years Coxheath has been experiencing discoloration and low water pressure.

The results of the pilot study indicated not only compliance with the CCME Canadian Drinking Water Guidelines but also met the new more stringent guidelines.

 

A pilot study was performed in Judique, Nova Scotia as a result of resent tests, performed by the Nova Scotia Environment, indicating higher than acceptable levels of trihalomethane (THM) in the water supply. THM's are formed when chlorine reacts with naturally occurring organic material in the raw water supply and have been linked to increased risk of developing certain cancers.

The Rawdon system performance met and exceeded the requirements of the Canadian Drinking Water Guidelines.

 

Another project performed by Rawdon was an environmental clean-up at the Nova Tire Recyclers in Cornwallis, Nova Scotia. Firefighters responded to a blaze in July 1999 where a fire burned a pile of shredded rubber equivalent to 100,000 tires.

Several months prior to the fire, earthen berms were formed to surround the tires. The water used by the firefighters to quench the blaze would be contained in these berms instead of running off into the countryside. It was the contents of these berms (approximately 2 million gallons of water) that was treated by our pilot trailer at a rate of 50,000 gallons per day.

Upon reviewing the test results, it was clear that Rawdon's water treatment system was able to meet the required guidelines. The discharge limit for the organic contaminants, such as, petroleum hydrocarbons and PAH's were based on the CCME Guidelines for drinking water quality. Also, other parameters such as C.O.D. and metals were based on Municipal Sewer Use Bylaws which enabled the treated water to be discharged to a Municipal Sewage Treatment Plant.
